My business is the repair and restoration of antique mechanical clocks. I have been restoring clocks full time since I established the business in May 1998.
I have had a strong interest in mechanical clocks for just about as long as I can remember. When I left school, a career in clock making and repairing was not an option as interest in mechanical clocks and watches was at an all time low. This was due to the introduction of quartz technology.
When I left school I served a craft apprenticeship in mechanical engineering. After this I studied mechanical engineering at the University of Glasgow gaining a BSc degree. On graduating I worked in the engineering industry for about 12 years where I was responsible for the manufacture of precision components from a wide range of materials.
Throughout years of study and working in the industry, my ambition to earn a living from horology grew stronger. In May of 1998 I stopped being an employee and started trading as a clock maker and clock repairer from my workshop. I am a one man business and operate as a sole trader. I am also a professional member of the British Horological Institute and regularly attend training courses and seminars run by the institute.
The processes and techniques I use to repair clocks are traditional and are endorsed by the code of practice of the British Horological Institute. I have experience in a wide range of clocks which can be broken down into many categories.
My specialities include:
Old English longcase clocks
Bracket clocks
Fusee dial clocks
French clocks
Carriage clocks
German wall clocks
Vienna wall clocks
1930s striking clocks
Chiming mantle clocks
